Williamsburg Botanical Garden and Freedom Park Arboretum entrance gate

The Williamsburg Botanical Garden and Freedom Park Arboretum showcases plants that support pollinators and other wildlife. It aims to educate visitors about environmental conservation, the importance of native plants and the prevention and control of invasive species. The Garden is located in Freedom Park, approximately one mile from the park entrance. Parking is available just past the Garden at the Interpretive Center. Public restrooms are available in the Interpretive Center. The Garden is free to the public and open every day of the year from 7 a.m. to sunset. The address is 5537 Centerville Road, Williamsburg, Virginia.

The two-acre Garden consists of over 20 distinct garden areas and is focused on using plants to support wildlife. Thousands of visitors come to enjoy the Garden throughout the year.  There are two covered pavilions with picnic tables for visitors to use. The pavilion by the Fairy Garden is a particular favorite of children as well as their parents.  Small weddings frequently take place in the Main Pavilion.

The Garden is maintained by a team of dedicated volunteers including Master Gardeners, Master Naturalists, and numerous other enthusiastic community members. Our operations are funded entirely from memberships, donations, grants, and the proceeds of our plant sale.

Follow the paths laid out to experience each of the Garden areas, some of which are left natural while others are more typical gardens.

  • Be sure to wander under the tall trees in the Old Pine Woods and Young Pine Woods, where limbs climb skyward and many species of ferns surround the tree roots. We have over 150 documented native trees and shrubs in the Garden, most of which can be enjoyed in our Woods. Many of these are mature specimens, a sight which is uncommon to see in one location. We are grateful for the skill, vision, and foresight of the original planners and design team of 20 years ago for this special collection of native plantings.
  • Stop by the Calcareous Ravine and marvel at how the plants cling to the rock crevices in this unique re-creation.
  • The Perennial and Shade Gardens by the main pavilion and patio have many plants that do well in the Peninsula area and are perfect for the home garden.
  • Don’t miss the MeadowButterflyPollinator, Hummingbird, and Cottage Gardens which are alive with butterflies and other pollinating insects in the late summer.
  • If you are visiting in the colder months, don’t miss the Fall and Winter Interest Border along the fence where you will see plants with interesting color, bark, berries and flowers.
  • Native Grasses and Succulents each have their own area.
  • The Pollinator Palace provides nest sites for native bees.
  • The Fairy Garden encourages the imagination of children to build their own village.
  •  The Therapy Garden allows those with disabilities to grow and eat their own vegetables.
  • The aroma from the plants in the Herb Garden engage the senses.
  • The SwampMarsh and Streambank Gardens demonstrate wetland plants.
  •  Don’t miss the carnivorous plants in the Bog Garden. Can you locate the Venus Flytrap plants?
