August 15 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Learn how to identify the Monarch butterfly by its specialized anatomy and explore its fascinating life cycle. By gathering more information about the Monarch’s habitat needs, you will be able to draw this marvelous butterfly to your yard using native plants.  Experience the Monarch butterfly’s full life cycle by learning the science behind its migration.

About our speakers:

Karen and Steve McCurdy have been active members and volunteers of the Butterfly Society of  Virginia since moving to Virginia Beach in 2003 and have served jointly on the BSV Board since 2009, currently as Co-Presidents. They have also served as docents at NBG’s native butterfly house since 2010. They became Certified Virginia Master Naturalists in 2016 and have been active in the Tidewater Chapter since then.  In 2023, they accepted the invitation by Dr. Chip Taylor, Director of Monarch Watch, to serve as Monarch Conservation Specialists.

This program will be held at the James City County Recreation Center, 5301 Longhill Road, Williamsburg, Meeting Rooms B & C. Due to the larger room size which will accommodate all of our partipants, it is no longer necessary to register.

Must be 18 years or older to attend. This program is free, but donations are welcomed to support the garden operations.
