BUTTERFLY FESTIVAL

It is with great excitement that, to celebrate their 10th anniversaries, Williamsburg Botanical Garden and Virginia Master Naturalists Historic Rivers Chapter offer to our community a Butterfly Festival at the Williamsburg Botanical Gardens at Freedom Park on August 1 and 2, from 9:00-5:00 each day. Funding for this program has been made possible through the generous support of the Williamsburg Area Council of Garden Clubs. This festival has several parts, but the main and most exciting focus will be a butterfly tent with over 200 butterflies enjoying those hot August days. This tent and butterflies, provided by Virginia Master Naturalist Catherine Short, will provide a wonderful opportunity for both children and adults to see hundreds of native butterflies close up. There will also be tables set up with information on local nature groups such as Colonial Nature Photography Club, Virginia Master Naturalists, Williamsburg Botanical Garden, and Master Gardeners. Some picnic tables will have independent activities for children as well as a costumed butterfly volunteer wandering around looking cute. We will also offer educational programs for families, children, and adults throughout the two days.
Admission is free but a $5 donation per person to support the Williamsburg Botanical Garden at Freedom Park would be appreciated.

· Saturday 1:00-1:30 Butterfly Coordinator Catherine Short – Make and Take Children’s Program – Take Home a Pupa and Watch a Butterfly Emerge (This program requires no registration but is limited to 10 families….simply because it requires a lot of hands on supervision.)
· Saturday 3:00-3:30 Make and Take Children’s Program – Take Home a Pupa and Watch the Butterfly Emerge – Leader TBD
· Sunday 10:00-10:30 Native Plant expert Denise Greene – What to Plant to attract Butterflies to your Garden
· Sunday 1:00-1:30 Butterfly Specialist Angela Zappalla – What’s Happening to our Monarchs?
