GARDENS WITH NO FLOWERS

Susan Voigt, a JCCW and New Kent Master Gardener and the facilitator of the native plant (NWF certified) Schoolyard Habitat Garden at Stonehouse Elementary in Toano, will suggest some plants that deer won’t eat — ferns for a shade garden and mosses on pathways and in little gardens. In sunny areas, ornamental grasses add interesting shapes and colors to traditional perennial beds, and the shorter sedges can be placed in front of taller blooming plants. These plants grow wild in much of Virginia, don’t need much care, and are not interesting to deer and rabbits. Most nurseries and garden centers offer many varieties of these alternative plants that add much interest to home landscapes. This event is part of the Learn and Grow Educational Series sponsored by the Williamsburg Botanical Garden. The program is free, although a $5.00 donation to help the Garden grow is appreciated.
